A man has doused himself and a house in petrol in Torpoint.

He set the kitchen alight this morning.

Police are praising officers and firefighters for getting him out alive.

They were scrambled to the house just before 3am on Monday morning.

Teams found a man holding a petrol can who, despite attempts to talk to him, began setting fire to things inside the house.

Fire crews flooded the house with water and gained entry.

The fire was quickly extinguished and the man was stopped from doing further harm.]

Crews say there were three dogs in the house at the time, although they had earlier been released into the garden.

A 49 year old man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and is currently in police custody where he will undergo a mental health assessment.

A police spokesman said: “Fire service colleagues and police response officers were working under tremendous challenging conditions and decisive quick thinking probably saved this man’s life.”
