Two Year Old Boy Found Lying Face Down in Beach Pool
7:00am 17th July 2013
A two year old boy has been pulled unconscious from a rock pool at Whitsand Bay.
The tot was found lying face down at Freathy beach by his mum.
Coastguards gave him oxygen until he was airlifted to Derriford by Cornwall Air Ambulance.
At around 4pm Senior RNLI lifeguard Andy Wrennall, who was on patrol between the red and yellow flags at Freathy beach, was alerted by a member of the public calling for assistance as a little boy had just been pulled out of a pool of water. Andy immediately responded and alerted his RNLI colleagues Terry Dungay, Chris Wafer and Charlie Gillett who responded from neighbouring Sharrow beach.
The two year old boy had been pulled from the water face down and unconscious by his mother. Upon doing so he vomited a lot of sea water and regained consciousness.
The RNLI lifeguards gave him oxygen and monitored his condition whilst making a request for an ambulance. A paramedic car, ambulance and Tamar Coastguard were all tasked and Cornwall Air Ambulance arrived on scene.
The lifeguards and coastguard teams quickly established a landing site and the little boy was swiftly evacuated to Derriford Hospital.
Chris Wafer, RNLI lifeguard supervisor said: "Time is of great importance in situations like this, it was lucky that the little boy was spotted when he was as he’d already swallowed a lot of water.
"The whole incident was over in about 40 minutes from when the lifeguards were alerted.
"Once again, team work between the RNLI lifeguards and the other emergency services meant the little boy was given medical attention very quickly."7:00am 17th July 2013
