Police have stood down an investigation into an alleged serious sexual assault in Launceston.

Officers said a reported attack on a 17 year old girl in Tower Street on Monday 22nd July, did not actually happen.

Detective Sergeant Rachael Bentley, who led the investigation, said: "Devon and Cornwall Police take all allegations of rape or sexual assault very seriously and any report will be thoroughly investigated.

"This case should not deter anyone from reporting any type of offence immediately so that full enquiries can be made.

"Local residents can be reassured that the crime did not take place and should not be unduly concerned for their safety. We would like to thank the public for their time and assistance in investigating this matter."
