St Austell Blaze Leads To Evacuation

Eleven people have been evacuated as flames ripped through sheltered accommodation in St Austell in a suspected arson attack.

Crews called in back up from Falmouth, Fowey, St Dennis, and Lostwithiel to Eastborne Road in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 0042 hours CFRS were called to a large house fire.

"Six fire fighting appliances from St Austell, Mevagissey, Fowey St Dennis and Lostwithiel attended with the addition of a ladder platform from Truro, breathing apparatus support from Falmouth and incident command unit from Launceston.

"On arrival of the first appliance crews were met with a well developed fire.

"The building was of two floors about 12m x 8m used as sheltered accommodation.

"At any time four fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus using two main jets were in use.

"A full fire investigation will be carried out later this morning."

One person has been arrested.
