Pirate FM has learnt parts of Cornwall will get superfast mobile phone signal within months.

Torpoint, Saltash and Millbrook will be covered by a 4G mast in Plymouth.

EE says it will come online "within six months."

But it is not clear how much further the signal will stretch into the rest of the Duchy.

4G networks can provide data to smartphones around five to six times faster than 3G connections, according to the networks, speeding up internet browsing and making it ideal for downloading and streaming high quality video and music.

Rodney Slade runs a campsite near Crackington Haven. He told Pirate FM they are still waiting to be able to make phone calls on some networks: "There's safety as well. People go wandering off on the coastal path, find a secluded beach and find they've got no signal. It could be very serious."

It comes on the day mobile networks Vodafone and 02 have flicked the switch on faster 4G data services.

O2's service will go live in London, Leeds and Bradford, reaching up to five million people initially, while Vodafone's offering will roll out in parts of the capital.

Both networks plan to have coverage in 13 cities by the end of the year - London, Birmingham, Bradford, Coventry, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.

They plan to eventually offer 4G to 98% of the UK.

Rival network EE stole a march on its rivals by launching its own service in October last year and already serves 100 towns and cities.

It had signed up 687,000 4G customers by the end of June.

Spokesman Howard Jones insists the Duchy's blackspots are not being forgotten about: "We're also upgrading our 3G network and trying to bring that to even more places.

"The 3G network covers 98% of the population already - so it's certainly in most places that people go."
