Missed appointments at Cornwall's biggest hospital are costing £4m a year.

Treliske says a hundred patients a day will not turn up this month.

Cash strapped bosses are launching a free new text reminder service to try to get that down.

Medical Director, Duncan Browne said: “There are sometimes good reasons for patients missing appointments but often the public do not realise the consequences for the NHS and other patients. Every missed appointment has an implication for the Trust and prevents someone else from attending.

“We are calling on all our patients to sign up to the free text reminder service to help them make arrangements for their appointment and get their treatment at the right time. If a patient can’t make an appointment they should always let us know and we can rearrange.

“We need to use NHS resources wisely and by attending appointments as planned our patients can help us ensure every penny counts towards improving patient care."

To sign up to the free new service patients can call 01872 254576 or email: rcht.mobile@cornwall.nhs.uk
