Antibiotic Warning

Coughs and sneezes ... but there is no cure for winter diseases.

A Cornish chemist is urging people not to ask for antibiotics for cold and flu.

A third of people in the southwest reckon they will help.

But Nick Kaye from Newquay says they are wrong: "Viruses, which are cold and flus, won't respond to antibiotics at all, they won't work. Antibiotics will only work for bacterial infections and if we use them inappropriately then there is a chance of resistance so both points are really really important.

"People are visiting GPs too early. In our region 83% went too early. NICE recommendations say people shouldn't really go and see the GP until about day 14."
