Cornish Mum Backs Free Meningitis B Jab
1:13pm 21st March 2014
A Camelford mum who had to watch her eleven month old baby battle meningitis B tells Pirate FM "the vaccine saves lives."
In a U-turn the government has confirmed babies will get it free on the NHS.
It is still subject to talks on costs.
Bev Pooley has been campaigning for that since little Ryley had part of his foot amputated.
He lost the tips of his fingers and toes too: "Simple little things that people would never think about like footwear and socks because obviously he's got one foot that's slightly smaller than the other with having the amputation to the foot. It's hard to get those things because it's not a common after issue.
"He has ongoing treatment and is hospitalised with operations so that's a cost, support with additional learning needs with schooling is a cost so if you look at the bigger picture it does cost the government in the long run
"Why would you not want to save lives if there is a vaccine there which is going to save lives? It is a necessity. If you had a cure for all the horrible, nasty diseases out there you would issue them surely"
