PHOTOS: Basking Shark Breach

Cornwall gets a rare glimpse of a breaching basking shark.
It is unusual for the creatures to leap out of the water so early in the year.
The photos were snapped off Porthcurno during a wildlife trip.
Hannah Jones took it: "We were on a trip out of Penzance, sailing on down the coast, mainly looking for dolphins and porpoises and we just rounded the corner into Porthcurno and I'd just been chatting about Basking Sharks and how we may get some early ones this year because the weather had been so mild over the winter .... and Duncan the skipper suddenly shouted 'Basking Shark breaching!' So we all looked - look again it might do it again. and it did and I managed to snap it on the camera.
"We have seen breaching basking sharks several times before, they do it possibly as part of courtship, but never so early and I've never managed to get the photo so I am very pleased, especially after we'd told them how unusual a sighting that is. It's one thing to see a shark in the distance swimming near the surface. It's quite another to see one hurling itself down onto the water with a massive splash."
