Redruth Flat Fire: Homes Evacuated
8:42am 25th June 2014
Pirate FM has learnt how a man woke up to find flames in his bedroom after a flat fire in Redruth.
Two people were rescued on Chapel Street in the early hours.
14 others had to be evacuated after the blaze broke out behind a freezer.
Chris lives upstairs: "These are only made out of chipboard and things like that and it could've gone up easily. I was asleep on the sofa upstairs; if I didn't wake up, well, I might not be here.
"It's definitely a surprise wake up call. The thing is kids used to set the alarms off all the times so we thought it was that first of all and then we saw the fire brigade out there and smelt the smoke."
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has released the following information:
Two appliances were mobilised to an address in Redruth to a property fire.
On arrival the crews were met by a number of the occupants who had left the property because of an alarm actuating as a result of a fire in a ground floor flat.
A message was relayed to Fire Control that there were persons unaccounted for and a further appliance was despatched.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus dealt with the fire and carried out a search of the premises to locate any occupants who were unaccounted for, further breathing apparatus crews were deployed and as a result, two occupants were rescued from the premises.
A number of the occupants were treated by Ambulance crews for smoke inhalation however, all occupants were allowed back into their homes.
A fire investigation will be carried out later this morning.
