U-Turn on Cornwall's Reserves

Plans to strip Truro of its army reserves are ditched.
The government wanted to switch Six Rifles to Barnstaple and Plymouth.
Locals campaigned against the move, warning it would make recruitment harder.
Now one platoon will stay in the Duchy with the HQ being moved to Devon.
Truro and Falmouth MP Sarah Newton said: "I am delighted to report that the Minister has confirmed to me today that D Company Sixth Battalion The Rifles will remain in Truro. Thank you to all those local people who signed my petition and helped me make the case.
Previously the MP had stated concerns: "The move would see local reservists, who already commit so much, have to travel to North Devon. The change would also reduce the centuries old connection with Cornwall enjoyed by the Rifles and their predecessor regiments.
"I know that Ministers will be listening closely to local views on the move, and hope that Cornwall can come together with one voice to show how important it for the strong links between the Duchy and the Rifles, which stretch deep into the past, to continue far into the future."
Piers Hankinson is Brigade Commander for the south-west: "It's not as though it's a piece of infrastructure that is a burden. it is extremely good base and it is exactly where we would want to have a reserve base and it's an important part of the community.
"I want to have a profile. I want to have a military presence and Reserves are great. So rest assured, from my perspective as a local Brigade Commander, I am fighting to have Reserves in Cornwall."
