Out Of Hours Doctors Overhaul

Cornwall's out of hours doctors could be run by another private company.

NHS Kernow says plans to let a local alliance operate the service when Serco pulls out next year are not workable.

The firm has had a history of problems - from staff shortages to fiddled figures.

It means others could be asked to bid for the contract.

A spokersperson for NHS Kernow said: 'NHS Kernow's Governing Body has decided not to proceed with its preferred interim solution for the out-of-hours' service in Cornwall.

The clinical commissioning group had been working with an alliance of local providers to develop an interim solution for the out-of-hours service, while the unscheduled care system is redesigned.'

Dr Iain Chorlton, a GP in Gunnislake and a member of the Governing Body said: "We had hoped this alliance contract with local providers would provide a good way to explore options during 2015/16.

"However it became clear to us that, at this time, the alliance solution is not workable and we are now pursuing an alternative approach for getting an out-of-hours service in place for June 2015.

"Our priority is to ensure continuity of a high quality urgent care service for patients."
