Beer Tax Warning
3:13pm 2nd March 2012
(Updated 3:13pm 2nd March 2012)
A Cornish MP joins calls for a hike in beer tax to be scrapped.
The government wants to up duty by more than 5% in the budget.
St Austell and Newquay's Stephen Gilbert warns that will hit 16,000 jobs.
He reckons over 3,000 in his constituency alone work in pubs and breweries:
"The sheer number of jobs that depend on the brewing and pub industries and the boost that is generated for the local economy because of them just goes to show how vital the sector is to mid-Cornwall and I hope the Chancellor will protect these jobs by scrapping the beer duty escalator."
"In a rural community like Cornwall, pubs play an even greater role than just a place to get a pint of Tribute, they are often a meeting place, provide vital services to the community and act as a life line for those living nearby. I believe that the Government must do all it can to support the industry and the jobs that come from it"
