Cheaper Parking Trial
3:54pm 15th March 2012
Cornwall gets cheaper parking.
A trial has started in Camborne, Redruth, Helston and Liskeard offering 24 hours for up to £2.50
It is hoped the move will draw in shoppers.
Lin Turner runs a florist in Helston and says it is about time
"A lot of people will stay for an hour, whizz round do everything and then they are gone. Which is a shame because you can't see really see all of Helston in an hour. it's better to have time to shop, to go in all the local shops and see what they've got to offer"
"i just think it's a great idea and long may it continue. If they can do it for longer then it's going to be good for everyone"
There are changes to short and long stay rates across the Duchy.
They include lower charges for one hour and/or two hour stays, lower evening ratesa nd cheaper parkign in the winter near beaches.
Some charges in places like Truro, Newquay and St Austell have seen an increase.
Councillor Graeme Hicks, the Council's portfolio holder for Transportation and Highways, said:
“It is hoped that the key tariffs will help to support the town centre economy,” added Councillor Hicks. “We are also working in partnership with others to develop further initiatives. However we must not lose sight that parking provides an important income stream that helps to support services provided by the Council."
Blue badge holders who currently have to pay for parking will benefit from an additional hour of free parking each time they park.
Graeme Hicks added:
"We recognise that those people with mobility issues may require more time to carry out their business and hope this concession will help."
