Cornwall's Jobs' Battle Revealed
7:26am 23rd May 2012
Pirate FM can reveal the big battle facing Cornish jobseekers.
The TUC union claims for every job vacancy in the Duchy, four people are on the dole.
It says almost 10 thousand are claiming the benefits.
Camborne dad of three Jason Thomas relied on the handouts for six months before recently finding work and admits the jobs' market is tough: "Frustrating more than anything. Luckily, I'm working now, but beforehand I was looking for work for six months, couldn't find anything, was on jobseekers allowance, it's not enough to live on. I've got three children, so it's hard.
"It's been hard, but my family have all pulled together and have helped me out. It's all about budgeting, food, make sure you've got enough money for the whole week. Then I've got my children, you've got to make sure you've got enough money to provide for them, clothes, whatever they need. It was difficult".
Donovan Gardner is Co-ordinator of Camborne and Redruth Food Bank.
He says there has been a big rise in the number of people they are helping: "You can tell when they come in, that they've never done it before. We've had people in that have been working for twenty years and suddenly they don't know what to do. They are really, really completely upset.
"We had a man a few weeks ago, he had a part-time job, his wife had a part-time job. They both lost their jobs and they had three children. That man came to the food bank, he hadn't eaten for three days. He could only feed his children".
It comes amid fears young people are being "shut out" of employment.
The Work Foundation claims almost half a million cannot get jobs, because they have not been taught the right skills.
Dr Paul Sissons wrote the report and says, "We need to be looking at what we're teaching young people in school and supporting the transition into employment to help young people develop these skills and also to get a sense of what that transition into the workplace might look like".
