Free Parking in Saltash
7:00am 7th July 2012
Officials have done a u-turn on blocking free parking in Saltash.
The Council had wanted more money in return for free parking on Saturdays.
But now local traders have got the go ahead. The town tried it at Christmas and shops say takings soared.
Jill Male runs the Bookshelf on Fore Street. She said, "Instead of having to rush back to their car after visiting the dentist or whatever they'd come in for, specific jobs, they would go around the town and it increased the footfall in all the shops.
"I think we might have suffered from the recession had it not been for the parking. I think the parking physically made a difference to people because they could come into the town and wander; they were here and they spent some money".
