Illegal Taxi Warning
12:44pm 5th October 2012
(Updated 12:44pm 5th October 2012)
Cornwall's warned of the risks of getting into an unlicensed taxi.
Pirate FM has learnt illegal drivers are trying to pick up from nightclubs in the early hours.
They fear it could be putting young women in particular in danger.
Bob Mears from the council says legal drivers have to go through strict tests...
"In relation to members of the public that just decide to operate as an illegal taxi; no such tests have been put in place. No-one knows how their health is, no-one knows what previous convictions they've had and the state of the vehicles is left to be desired at times.
"Travel with another person, particularly if you're female. If you get into a hackney carriage look for the roof light. It's not easy but if you go round to the back of the vehicle on the back of the vehicle there is a taxi plate and when you get in just check to see if he driver's wearing his badge.
