West Cornwall has been named one of the best places in the UK to spot dolphins.

Penzance and Lizard Point are top for sightings according to conservation group Planet Whale.

It claims Common, Risso's and Bottlenose dolphins, as well as the Harbour Porpoise and Basking Shark can all be seen around the Duchy's coast.

Co-founder Ian Rowlands explained why the marine creatures swim close to our shores:

He said: "You got an amazing convergence of currents here, and incredibly productive piece of ocean, the Atlantic. For alot of these animals, they're a little bit threatened from shipping, from marine pollution, so I don't want to be too relaxed about it but we're lucky that we have such a beautiful, pristine marine environment for them.

"There's no doubt about it, they inspire people in a way that most other things in the natural world just don't. If you take anybody whose not the least interested in wildlife and say, 'do you want to see a dolphin in the wild, leaping out of the water', and everybody says yes."
