South-West NHS Complaints
4:50pm 9th November 2012
Pirate FM has learnt that a woman whose dad died in hospital was told "no comment" when she asked south-west health bosses how he caught pneumonia.
It is one of 171 complaints about healthcare in Cornwall and Plymouth last year.
James Johnstone from the health ombudsman says the way they are handled has to change: "Parts of the NHS aren't always handling complaints as well as they should and could. We're seeing examples of careless communication, insincere apologies and unclear explanations time and again from some organisations.
"We would like to see the NHS constitution's commitment to clear investigations that are independent and transparent, good sympathetic explanations and a focus on putting things right where they've gone wrong."
