Mum Goes Without Meals for 9 Days to Feed Children
7:01am 30th November 2012
Pirate FM has learnt a Cornish mum has gone without meals for nine days so she could feed her children.
Food banks in the Duchy have told us they have never been so busy.
In Camborne, Pool and Redruth volunteers have handed out sixteen hundred food packages to families in just two hours.
Co-ordinator Don Gardner said: "Nine days with no food. That is horrendous when you think about it. By the time she pays her rent, heating etc. she's got nothing left hardly. She's found, to keep a roof over her head, she's got to go without food. It's that simple a decision unfortunately.
"Food prices have gone up tremendously. Wages have not kept up to that level at all. People are making really serious decisions: Eat or heat; feed their children and don't feed themselves."
New research says an estimated one in ten people in Cornwall has suffered from food poverty this year - either skipping meals, going without food to feed the family, or relying on family and friends for food.
More than one in twenty has had to skip meals because they couldn't afford food, and nearly half of those said it is the first year that has happened.
But food charity FareShare and Foodbanks charity the Trussell Trust say only a small number are asking for help.
They are helping launch the biggest ever food collection appeal in the UK. Help Feed People In Need takes place this weekend in over 800 Tesco stores across the UK.7:01am 30th November 2012
