Jobs Boost for West Cornwall
2:44pm 25th January 2013
As the economy shrinks sparking fears of a triple-dip recession, a new jobs boost for Cornwall has been unveiled.
The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company is creating more than fifty new posts, thanks to a major investment programme.
It is upgrading the airport at Land's End, leasing a new plane and doing up the Scillonian ferry.
It comes after helicopters to the islands were scrapped in October.
James Marston, Chief Executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, said: "Certainly at Land's End, we'll make siginificant improvements to harden the runway. Certainly, from our investments in the ship, we'll improve the passenger experience on the ship quite considerably in terms of the interior. It will also mean the ship can operate for longer if we need to.
"There's a range of jobs there, some of which are highly paid for the area. We currently employ, in the winter months, about 160 people. And this significant increase, will be taking us well over 200 in the summer season of this year."
