Fire has ripped through a derelict hotel in Newquay.

The blaze broke out at the Cedars on Mount Wise on Wednesday evening.

Around thirty people living nearby were forced out of their homes. An evacuation centre was set up as around fifty firefighters battled back the flames.

Ben was working nearby: "There are fire engines up there, ambulances, police have got the road closed off and it's just billowing smoke. They've got one of the big cranes pumping water into the roof and there are firemen all around it with hoses. Flames keep leaping through the windows and a few of the windows have blown out."

Stewart Whitworth from the fire service said: "Because we're not committing people into the property it's really a question of putting the fire out using jets from what we call defensive positions outside the building."

Nobody was injured, but it took teams more than seven hours to put the flames out.

Those evacuated from their homes were allowed back by 10.30pm.

An investigation is beginning into what sparked the blaze, although locals have told Pirate FM derelict buildings nearby are regularly used by squatters.
