1 in 20 Cornish Children Cutting Class
9:48am 3rd April 2013
Pirate FM's learnt Cornwall has one of the worst rates for primary school children who cut class.
Over a thousand regularly missed lessons last year. That is one in twenty.
Part of it is being put down to parents taking their children out of lessons to go on holiday during term time.
Joanne is a mum in Bude and runs a cafe. She said: "I have to take them out of school during term time because of the business I'm in. When am I going to get to take my children on holiday? We need a holiday at the end of the summer because we've worked that hard.
She argues that good holidays can also be educational: "Life skills more than anything. Socialising - mixing with other children while they're on holiday. There's obviously differenet sporting activities they can do, there are clubs they can go to."
But Headteacher at Penryn Junior Robin Cowen warns the effects can be long lasting: "The curriculum will be disjointed for them. Their progress will be affected and there may well be an impact in terms of confidence, self-esteem, personal development - including friendships. All of these things can take a hit.
"It may be there are welfare issues, difficulties within the family, which means these absences can't be authorised.
"There is also a problem around seasonal work in Cornwall. People who work in the tourist industry, for example, may have to take their holidays outside of that in term time."9:48am 3rd April 2013
