Snow Hits Cornwall In May
11:25am 16th May 2013
Snow-go in Cornwall.
Pirate FM has seen pictures of cars and gardens covered in the white stuff.
A police officer tweeted the photos taken near Newquay first thing on Thursday morning.
Margaret Emerson is a forecaster at the Met Office.
She tells Pirate FM it is not unheard of: "Anybody who was around in the south-west in 1935 would've woken up in some places to four or five inches of snow. Normally over the moors you'd probably expect one or two days in May when you'd see some snow falling so it's not unheard of but a little unusual.
"Most of our weather comes in from the Atlantic and the Jet Stream is really the converyor belt that drives the weather systems around. When we have the warmer spell the Jet Stream had pushed a little bit further north. At the moment it's well south and we've got particularly cold air across the country at the moment."
