About Pirate FM
The station was launched in 1992 under the name of Pirate FM 102 with the voice of breakfast presenter Roger Day (a well known DJ from Radio Caroline). The founders of Pirate FM specified digital technology so advanced that it was featured on the BBC technology programme, Tomorrow's World.
Many awards have been picked up by the station, its presenters, and journalists. The most notable award is The Sony Radio Academy Award where Pirate FM received the gold award - for station of the year in the 300,000-1,000,000 listener category - in the years 2003 and 2006.
Despite the increased competition Pirate FM remains as the number one station by audience reach in the core 25 to 54 age range within its TSA (Cornwall and West Devon). In this key demographic Pirate FM has more listeners than any other station in its TSA, either commercial or BBC, national or local.
