3 Ways to Make Yourself Feel Great

18th October 2017

It can be easy to feel that you are stuck in a rut. Daily routines, while necessary, can make you feel that you are not living the life that you thought you might be at this time in your life. If this is how you feel, you need to take some time out of your schedule and reflect on how you can do things differently to rejuvenate your zest for life. Here are 3 ways to inject some energy back into your life, and to take control of your future.

Get Fit

You know the health benefits to your body by keeping active and healthy, but a person's mental health and wellbeing often understated. Exercise is more than a cardiovascular workout, it is a tool that brings many positive benefits for our mental health. Regular physical activity such as a brisk daily walk increases our alertness, energy and encourages a positive mood; all of which improves the quality of life that we experience.

  • Mood

Research has shown that physical activity has a positive impact on our mood, more so than watching a film or reading a book. Feelings of contentment and alertness increase, and people feel calmer having been active. The benefits of activity were seen to be greater in people whose mood was initially very low, so the worse you feel, the greater the benefit you will experience.

  • Stress

Life events can cause us great stress, and upset our natural balance. Not only do we mentally feel stressed, but our bodies physically react by releasing the stress hormones that prepare us for flight or fight. Our bodies respond to stress by increasing the heart rate which raises our blood pressure in preparation for an emergency response; the blood flow to our skin is reduced and cortisol releases sugars and fat into our system to fuel the response. By exercising, your body produces endorphins that are the perfect antidote to stress as they are the feel-good neurotransmitters in your brain.

  • Self-esteem

As your fitness and appearance improve, your self-esteem will soar. By devising a fitness schedule that fits in with your lifestyle, you can set yourself achievable goals. You must set realistic goals that will encourage you to do more physical exercise. It is quite unnecessary to enter a marathon before you have even put on a pair of running shoes, but you could say to yourself that you are going to walk every day for 20 minutes for a month. Once you have completed your month, you will feel a real sense of accomplishment, and it will inspire you to further your activity.

Get a new job

We spend so many of our waking hours at work, and if you have been doing the same job for a long time, it is easy to become disenchanted with work. Whether you are in a high-pressure role or a job that doesn’t challenge you enough, the effect is the same: exhaustion and stress. You can start to feel burnt out, and this seeps into the rest of your life. Signs of needing a new job include dreading Mondays, regularly wanting to call in sick, and feeling like you can do your job with your eyes shut – you are not reaching your full potential, and you can start to resent your job.

Now is the perfect time to take stock of your skills. Update your CV, and review it. Identify the things that you have enjoyed and the things that you haven’t. By understanding what you don’t like is just as important as knowing what you do. Remember, the skills that you have in one role are more than likely transferable to other roles, and it is how you present them in your CV that will get you noticed by a future employer. Never underestimate the value of your experience and achievements.

Do not place a self-imposed restriction on where you search for a job either. If you want a job overseas, go for it. Jobs in the Maldives may seem like a dream, but they can become your reality. If you want a job in the music industry, go for it. If you don’t ask, you won’t get. Use LinkedIn to heighten your profile and make connections to the movers and shakers in the industry that you want to target; most people respond well to candidates showing initiative, and the worst-case scenario is that they say that they haven’t got time to communicate. Do not be disheartened, and show resilience.

Update your Style

If you have been neglecting how you are feeling, there is a good chance that you have been neglecting how you are looking. Appearance is not everything, but it can go a long way to making you feel either good or bad about yourself. Make an extra effort to make sure that you look good – the phrase ‘fake it until you make’ it is appropriate! When you look fabulous, you will start to feel fabulous. You will receive compliments, and be less likely to withdraw from social situations. When you put effort into your appearance, you are broadcasting your self-respect. So, how do you update your style?

Try on all your clothes; you need to be both brutal and honest. If a garment does not fit your body shape, or the colour doesn’t flatter your complexion, get rid of it! You will find that you have some basic pieces that go with anything: t-shirts, jeans, cardigans and jumpers – these are keepers. Be mindful that high fashion items have a shelf life, and that your basics can be updated by the accessories that you pair with them. It is far more cost efficient to update with accessories rather than paying for a whole new wardrobe.

Think about your hairstyle. When was the last time you had a new style? There is nothing like a good stylist to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Ask friends for recommendations as to who cuts their hair, and take the plunge! You want your haircut to accent your features and a colour that adds to your complexion, rather than drain it.
