Five Heart-warming Stories of Modern Philanthropy Revealed

10th March 2020

There are few experiences in life that can make a person feel as good as helping others. Whether a small helping hand or a massive donation of time or effort, everything we do on this front contributes, on some level, to making the world a better place. With this in mind, we want to look at what can happen when some of the richest people in the world reach out and into their wallets. What have been the biggest philanthropic donations in recent years, and who made these possible?

Warren Buffet

A well-known philanthropist, Warren Buffet is no stranger to helping out the less fortunate. This was especially the case in 2012 when he pledged stocks worth over a billion dollars to charitable organisations run by his three children. Covering issues such as women's inequality, social justice, and ending world hunger, Buffet's example is one we wish more billionaires would follow.

Bill Gates

As co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates stood for a long time as the richest man on earth. While he has recently been surpassed by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, his contributions and dedication to charities remain immense. Together with Warren Buffet, Bill Gates has pledged to give away at least half of his wealth to charity. With a net worth of $112.8 billion, this is no insignificant amount.

Money stacks

Tej Kohli

Speaking of billionaires, few have diverse a chartable portfolio as Tej Kohli. Born in Delhi, Kohli has made a major focus on helping those in his home country, with his foundations working towards treating blindness, poverty, and a rare medical condition known as xeroderma pigmentosum. Now aiming at the biotechnology sector, Kohli strives to be one of the first out there to develop mainstream solutions for artificial limb replacement.

This is an interesting one, with the benefactor unknown to this day. In 2010, an unknown graduate dedicated $200 million to Texas' Baylor University. Designed to help support research and fund a variety of programs, this donation still sits as one of the largest the world has ever seen. All from a person who didn't care one iota about being credited for helping others.

Mark Zuckerberg

The inventor of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg struck the motherlode when he designed his social media platform, and history has illustrated he's not one to let his wealth go to waste. In 2017, he and his wife Pricilla Chan donated stock worth $1.8 billion to the Chan Zuckerberg foundation. Working towards giving equal opportunities for high-level education, their donations here have opened the paths for thousands to a better life.

Stepping Up

While it's easy to be impressed by these donations, we need to remember that it is very possible to make positive changes to the world ourselves. Even without the means of those in the above list, we can still touch the lives of many who are struggling. Whether spending some time supporting directly or donating some spare cash when you can, every little bit helps. Even if you can only manage to make one person happier, healthier, or safer, you’ll be leaving the world better than how you found it.
