19th February 2020

You feel that you are ready for change. You want to take charge of your future. You want to be in control of how your days are spent. You want to have a role that you are truly passionate about. You want to become your own boss.

Studies have shown that an increasing number of people are choosing to leave traditional employment to move into freelance roles. It was reported in 2019, that new data showed that there had been an increase in the number of people looking to go freelance in the UK, with an annual increase of 31%. This data fits with statistics from the Office for National Statistics, which reported that the number of self-employed people in the UK had risen from 3.3 million in 2001 to 4.8 million in 2017.

Bearing that in mind, below we have shared a few pieces of advice to help you to get started in your transition from being employed to becoming your own boss.

Determine what you want to do

Ask yourself: what product do you want to sell or what service do you want to offer? Maybe you’ve always dreamed of starting a business in a particular field - if so, perhaps this could be the route that you should focus on?

Or, you may have a certain skill set that is perfect for launching a business within a specific industry? Think about what you have to offer as well as what route has the best potential for success.

Set yourself up for success

If you are serious about making a real go of being your own boss, it’s important that you set yourself up for success. But what does this mean though?

It means thinking about all of the factors that you need to consider to give your venture the very best chance of success. For instance, if you’re not able to drive, then you might want to consider taking a course from a driving school Worcester to make getting around to meetings and other events easier and less time-consuming.

It also means thinking about investing in the key tools that your business will need to have the best chance of achieving growth. You also need to consider creating a business plan to help drive yourself to meet your goals and aspirations.

Make the change

Are you now hoping to quit your current role and instantly transition into being your own boss or do you want to make the change gradually? A large number of people say that they tend to prefer to make the change gradually, so this means dropping down to part-time at their employed role, while determining if their business idea is actually a viable one and has the potential to achieve success in a set period of time.

If you want to become your own boss in 2020, you need to take note of the tips and advice above and implement them into your action plan.
