The three most memorable outfits from the 2020 Grammys revealed

7th February 2020

Just a few days ago, the 62nd annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles’ Staples Center. Although the ceremony was overshadowed by the news of the tragic passing of LA Lakers icon Kobe Bryant, many of the stars present opted to make an impact on the red carpet this year.

With every Grammy Awards ceremony that passes, checking out the outfits and designs of the biggest names in the music industry is just as exciting as seeing them deliver unbelievable performances on-stage. If you’re wondering which superstars stepped up their fashion game for the 2020 Grammy Awards, let’s take a look at the top trio of outfits to cause the biggest stir in the entertainment business.

Billie Eilish rocked the oversized suit

It has been something of a breakthrough year for 18-year-old superstar singer, Billie Eilish. The last 12 months saw the LA-born singer-songwriter release her debut album, under the Interscope Records label owned by Universal Music Group, titled When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? It was the best-performing album in the US during 2019, reaching the top of the Billboard 200, too.

It was therefore no surprise to see Eilish nominated for several Grammys this year – six to be exact. Clearly, Eilish herself was keen to dress to impress the watching millions on the Grammys red carpet, opting for a striking, oversized green and black suit from Gucci, along with accessorised gloves and jewellery. Her nails were also kept incredibly long, with a complementary dark green nail art completing her look, allegedly taking four hours to paint according to Forbes.

Eilish was undeniably the queen of the 2020 Grammy’s, bagging five awards from her six nominations, including best new artist and record of the year, both of which cement her place in pop royalty. In the fashion industry, her links to Gucci are seemingly very intriguing, given that the once-troubled fashion house appears to be experiencing something of a renaissance. Having Eilish as the face of the new-look Gucci will only help usher in a new generation of Gucci followers.

Alessandra Ambrosio’s half-romper, half-cape appearance

As wild outfits go for the Grammys, Brazilian model, Alessandra Ambrosio’s half-romper, half-cape look topped the lot. The 38-year-old is famed for her work with Victoria’s Secret and made the biggest of all entrances with her cross between a dress and shorts, showing plenty of leg in the process. Well, at least one leg anyway. The right-hand side of her outfit was an all-black dress, while the left-hand side was white and strapless, cutting off at her thighs. The contrasting black and white outfit was designed by Balmain, a luxury French fashion house headquartered in Paris.

Black and white makes such a good contrasting colour scheme, both in fashion and business. The contrast is the most readable and practical, helping visual elements appear less flat and more interesting. In the case of Ambrosio’s outfit, the contrast was used to define the two distinct halves to her look. Commercially, black and white contrasts are in vogue right now. You only have to look at Betway Casino's branding and UI layout to discover the impact white on black has in terms of readability. The fusion of black and white doesn’t just give an impression of practicality, but also one of style and sophistication. Similarly, Bentley’s unmistakable logo embodies luxury and class that its customers can trust.

The other benefit of Ambrosio’s sleek, classy black and white ensemble was that she could go big on the sparkle thanks to her unembellished silk number. Her jaw-dropping TASAKI Atelier earrings were a striking rectangular design, while her jewelled Gianvito Rossi heels also helped accentuate her beautiful lengthy figure.

Lizzo’s Cinderella moment

When it came to the most glamorous and sophisticated look of the night, that nod goes to Lizzo. The singer arrived on the Grammys red carpet with eight nominations to her name, the highest number in the ceremony. However, the “Cuz I Love You” star embraced her inner Diana Ross by rocking up wearing an angelic all-white Atelier Versace dress. The strapless gown had stunning Swarovski crystals hand-embellished, adding to the grandeur of her appearance, as her stylist, Marko Monroe, sought to give Lizzo a look akin to the many “powerful, iconic women” that have walked the same red carpet before her.

It was also a message to the wider world watching the Grammy’s that artists like Lizzo didn’t need to stand out aesthetically to make an impact. She enjoyed her iconic ‘Cinderella moment’ onstage during the ceremony, performing in an altogether different black crystal dress, adorned with Hollywood’s iconic Lorraine Schwartz gems. It was another charming and classic ensemble, with a slight Lizzo twist to ensure that she always looks “as good as hell”.

The Grammys red carpet always takes us on a wild journey each year, but 2020 was fashion at its most eclectic best
