VIDEO: Cats Die From 'Anti-Freeze Poisoning'

Published at 8:44am 11th February 2017. (Updated at 9:12am 11th February 2017)

Vets have issued a warning after several cats died from suspected anti-freeze poisoning in mid-Cornwall.

Monument Vets posted a message on its Facebook page, saying they have seen "multiple poisonings" in the Camborne and Redruth area.

They say the symptoms are consistent with being exposed to anti-freeze.

The practice says several animals have died in and around Beacon and others are missing.

Experts are urging owners to keep their pets inside and it comes as temperatures plummet across Cornwall.

On Friday night, the team posted: "We've seen no more reported cases but we have been asked for more information on antifreeze poisoning.

"Initial clinical signs (less than 12 hours post poisoning) are vomiting, depression, lethargy and a drunken appearance.

"12 to 24 hours after poisoning further depression is seen and cats will stop eating and develop a high heart rate and kidney failure.

"After 24 hours the kidney failure worsens and urine will stop being passed and vomiting will start. The heart rate may slow.

"Unfortunately it is unusual to identify a cat in the earlier stages and most have kidney failure by the time they get to a vets. In extreme cases kidney failure will occur within 12 hours.

"Unless caught early and treated appropriately the poisoning will result in death".
