Flames have ripped through a Cornish country hotel in a blaze investigators say was started accidentally.

Crews were called to Great Trethew Manor near Liskeard just after lunchtime on Tuesday.

50 firefighters from Truro to Saltash battled the blaze at at the old manor at Horningtops, calling in back-up from Devon.

Officers got the call after reports of smoke billowing from the roof.

Eyewitnesses in Menheniot have reportedly described seeing plumes of smoke 100ft high.

Chris works at the nearby Adrenalin Quarry and said: "It looked like a bit of sea mist coming off from up Looe way. It was quite thick and dark smoke, then it was just a lot of smoke just billowing up and blowing across.

"It's one of the main businesses around here so, probably, it will affect everybody but I imagine being here for a while, the community will pull together and help out in any way they can."

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service says nobody was hurt.

A spokesperson said: "On receipt of this call, appliances from Liskeard and Bodmin were mobilised, there was reported smoke coming from the  roof of a large property.

"On first attendance it was reported that smoke was issuing and further appliances were requested making a total of four appliances to attend then, shortly after this message, further resources were requested and a total of six appliances and the aerial ladder platform were mobilised.

"The fire is involving a detached three storey manor house, measuring 30m by 20m and the fire is located on the second floor."

Crews were pulled out of the building when the floor began to crumble beneath their feet.

Guests staying at the hotel arrived home from a day out to find the smouldering remains. Nearby locals offered them a bed for the night. The fire service and Cornwall Council worked together to ensure everyone had accommodation.

More than twenty firefighters remained at the scene overnight, damping down hotspots.
