Land's End Airport Runway Delays

There are more delays to work on the runway at Land's End airport.

Flights are running from Newquay because the strip keeps getting waterlogged.

It was meant to be resurfaced this month but bosses are waiting for a decision on EU funding.

This after Pirate FM told you visitor numbers to Scilly have dropped by a quarter since Penzance heliport shut.

Campaigner Dick Cliffe is worried: "People are taking shorter trips and in that context, a high ticket price and then the uncertainty on whether you will get there on time or get away on time becomes much more of an issue.

"We're not just talking about 2,200 islanders. We're talking about the economy of west Cornwall and about a much wider body of people who have an empathy with the islands and who think it's a unique location in the UK"

A spokesman for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said: "Until we know the European Commission's decision we can't say when the works will be undertaken but they will be timed to minimise disruption and avoid peak travel periods.

"We are not planning to close the airport for runway works for two weeks in March as originally planned because we are still awaiting the funding decision.

"Given the forecast of more rain in the coming days we have informed passengers that we will continue to operate via Newquay Cornwall airport until Saturday and are reviewing the situation daily."
