The family of Perranporth's mystery man say they are "shocked and deeply saddened" by his death.

They have described Alan Jeal as "a mild-mannered gentle man" and say they are "desperate for answers".

He had lived alone in Wadebridge for most of his life and was a keen surfer

Police are now trying to find out how he spent the last few days of his life after his body was discovered on Perranporth beach by a dog walker.

DCI Dave Thorne: "We are looking at a whole range of reasons as to how he may have died. Murder is one option but it may however just be a tragic accident. So, we are looking at a variety of possibilities, we're keeping an open mind.

"Now we know who he is we can actually explore what his lifestyle was, we can explore who his friends, family and associates were, we can explore where he bought stuff from, where he ate and that kind of thing and it really helps us take forward his lifestyle of his movements just before he died."
