Pirate FM has learnt the number of rapes in parts of Cornwall have risen 68%.

Police say there have been another two rapes reported over the last month in south east Cornwall.

In the west numbers have risen more than 50% since 2011. There were more than 120 cases over the last year.

Inspector Dan Ivy said: "People have been coming forward to tell us about offences, to tell us about offences that are historical. There are some national implications in terms of the recent nationwide scandal about Jimmy Savile and that also plays its part.

"There is work going on in the background to set up a specific sexual offences investigation team so that we can co-ordinate our response and give a specific tailored service to victims of that type of crime who might need specialist interventions."

Georgie Constance from Victim Support had this advice: "People need to plan when they're going out in the evening - who they're going out with, where they'll meet up if they get separated and also plan what the journey is going home to make sure nobody gets left behind and is therefore vulnerable.

"The effect this sort of crime can have on people is to make them withdrawn and afraid, worried about going up, knocking their confidence at work and needing to take time off sick. But, if they do come forward, they will get the help that they need."

Research suggests that sexual assaults are more likely to happen in "transitory spaces" such as alleyways, halls and the street. Rapes are more likely to happen in places where a degree of intimacy is already possible.

Tips To Stay Safe

  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings Avoid being out alone with your iPod earphones in after dark
  • Stay With Your Friends When you're out drinking do not be tempted to go off with someone you have only just met or even an old acquaintance if you do not feel comfortable
  • Trust Your Instincts If something feels wrong, then get out or phone for help
