Cornwall is named as one of Europe's top ten poverty capitals.

Figures from Eurostat say the Duchy is the worst off place in Britain and falls behind places like Poland, Lithuania and Hungary.

Average wages here are £14,300 - nationally they are £23,300 and across Europe, £20,750

Kim Conchie from Cornwall's chamber of commerce told Pirate FM jobs and pay are key: "We're still some 18% below the national average at the moment in Cornwall and that's unacceptable so I want the council and large employers In Cornwall to take a stand and make sure that over the next ten years low wages are addressed."

He added that some support is there though: "Why the government is generous with Cornwall is that we are still behind the curve and they see the need for spreading prosperity throughout the country and that means Cornwall needs more than its fair share at the moment."

But the Duchy's foodbanks say they can only see things getting worse. Use has more than doubled in three years, the outlet in Camborne, Pool and Redruth is dishing out more than nine thousand meals a month.

Rachel Collard runs Launceston's foodbank and told Pirate FM they have helped two thousand out of the eleven thousand strong population: "Whereas last year it was people in crisis, it is now people that just cannot afford to live, so what was a crisis is becoming a day to day problem for people.

She added that many families find it hard to ask for help: "Especially working families who have never really had to come in for help before, they feel that they shouldn't really be here. But it is here, it is there for everybody who is facing a crisis and that is what we try and get across."
