Cornwall's New Front Against Obesity

Cornish families battling the bulge are being given more help.

Free weight management courses are being rolled out by the council.

They include healthy lifestyle advice, activity sessions and cooking skills.
     
Cornwall Healthy Weight courses will run from the end of June into September at Leedstown, Falmouth, Wadebridge, Launceston, Camborne and St Austell.  

Annie attended a previous course, suffering from high blood pressure, joint pain and depression, with a BMI that showed her to be severely obese.  With help from the course instructors she made major changes to her lifestyle, and is now exercising more, eating more healthily and is suffering from much-reduced medical symptoms, as well as now having a BMI which is now only 'overweight'.

 
Julia also attended a previous course in St Austell.  She weighed 21 ½ stone at her heaviest, and now weight 16 stone.  She said "I wish everyone knew about the Cornwall Healthy Weight course as it really does teach us about what is in food, portion sizes, health benefits, cooking, healthy recipes and personal wellbeing, with new friends included.  Thank you weight management team!"

Felicity Owen, Director of Public Health, said: "Obesity is a factor in many serious illnesses including type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. The effectiveness of these programmes is well demonstrated through measures such as weight loss, improved health outcomes and quality of life"
 
Jim McKenna, Cabinet member for Health and Adult Care added: "These courses are an excellent means of improving the health of people of Cornwall.  So many people suffer from the negative health effects caused by obesity, and participating in this course, really getting involved and taking on board the messages, can make a difference to people's lives. I would encourage you to book yourself on if you need help losing weight, or passing on the information to friends and family members if necessary."
