Cornwall has been revealed as the most expensive place in the UK to take a holiday.

Tripadvisor says a week self-catering, with one meal out and basic groceries comes to £854 in the Duchy.

Devon is about £30 cheaper - while Shropshire is almost £300 less.

The poll was based on a one week rental of two bed accommodation in the period of June to August.

In Shropshire the total bill came to £566.

The next cheapest destination was Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, followed by Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and North Yorkshire.

Tourist officials in the Duchy pointed to the investment in four and five star accommodation over the last few years - and pointed out that you get what you pay for.
