Cornwall Air Ambulance Appeals to Westminster

Cornwall Air Ambulance at Derriford Landing Site

Cornwall Air Ambulance takes its Derriford appeal to Westminster.

The charity is meeting with MPs to discuss the night time landing facilities at the hospital.

At the moment the site is unlit and unsurfaced.

The helicopters are due to start flying in the dark from December.

Now they need funds to get it sorted in time.

Cornwall Air Ambulance spokesperson Tom Matthews said: "Around about 60 percent of the patients we airlift to hospital go to Derriford, the issue is that the landing facilities are literally a patch of grass in the middle of the hospital site, they're not lit up they're not paved at all and that is going to become a problem.

"We will simply be unable to use the landing facilities at Derriford Hospital, what that essentially could mean is that we will attend an incident where a patient has trauma injuries and needs to be treated at a major trauma centre, and we will be unable to get them there."
