A pet dog has been found in Newquay with most of her fur fallen out - and her claws so long they were overlapping each other.

Rosie's skin was bleeding because she scratched so much.

A vet found she had been suffering for at least six months.

She is one of more than 2,000 investigations carried out by the RSPCA in the Duchy last year.

But cruelty convictions have dropped two thirds to just ten.

John Phipps from the charity told Pirate FM: "That took months to get to that stage where basically she had scratched and scratched. The majority of her fur had come out. Her skin was red raw and sore and thickened from where she had constantly scratched. That is easily preventable with flea treatment - that's all it takes."Rosie

Rosie has now made a full recovery and has a new home living alongside another Jack Russell.

Her owner was disqualified from keeping animals for five years and was ordered to pay £1,300 costs as well as being fined £425.

John told Pirate FM: "Luckily in Cornwall we see very few cases of outright sadistic cruelty to animals. It does happen, but it's isolated incidents. But we do see a lot of cases where it's general neglect - animals without water or without food."
