The town's lifeboats and coastguards were scrambled to East Pentire yesterday afternoon.

They got him back to Crantock - where the air ambulance was waiting.

He has been taken to Treliske in a serious condition.

A spokesperson for Newquay lifeboat said: "Newquay RNLI lifeboat volunteers were alerted by Falmouth Coastguard to an incident on the Gannel Estuary side of the headland at East Pentire at 4.04pm, The station's two inshore lifeboats were launched in calm seas and good visibility and the volunteer crew assisted other emergency services at the scene.

"On arrival at Salt Cove, East Pentire, Newquay RNLI volunteers worked with colleagues from HM Coastguard, the police and RNLI lifeguards.

"Emergency treatment was given and the casualty was transferred by lifeboat to Crantock Beach where they were met by the Cornwall Air Ambulance and taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Newquay RNLI lifeboat volunteers returned to their station at the harbour at around 5.30pm."
