VIDEO: Pilot Praised After Culdrose Crash Landing

A pilot is being praised after he managed to crash land his stricken plane away from the crowd at Culdrose air day.

Thousands of people were watching when smoke started billowing out of the Sea Fury, which dates back to the 1940s.

Chris Gotke managed to get it down, before one of the wheels collapsed sending it spinning onto the grass.

He walked away unhurt as emergency crews moved in.

It happened during the penultimate display of the day at the Helston base, bringing the event to a premature end.

There were gasps from the crowd as it became clear the historic aircraft was in trouble.

Eye-witnesses have told Pirate FM they heard a loud bang, before smoke started pouring out of the side.

The pilot did a sweeping turn back towards the airfield. As he tried to put the wheels down, one collapsed, sending him spinning off the runway and onto the grass.

The crowd applauded as he opened the cockpit and walked away.

Organisers at Culdrose tweeted: "Everyone do not panic. The main thing is the pilot is okay and fire engines are on scene."
