Out Of Hours Doctors Overhaul

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 2:49pm 2nd October 2014.

Private companies are being asked to bid to run Cornwall's out of hours doctors' service.

NHS Kernow is putting the contract out to tender, ahead of Serco pulling out next year.

It has had a history of problems, from staff shortages to fiddled figures.

Last month, Pirate FM told you plans to let a local alliance take control had been scrapped.

Dr Iain Chorlton is on the governing body and said: "Tendering for services provides an opportunity to improve service quality, patient outcomes and value for money.

"Serco is currently performing well and we intend to commission a service that builds on that good work. The out-of-hours service for Cornwall will be an important part of our ambition to create community services that work together for the benefit of local people.

"We will be involving local clinicians and patient representatives in our process, and will announce the new provider early next year."
