Operation Cancelled FIVE Times

Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust

An Illogan mum has laid into the Royal Cornwall - after having her operation postponed five times.

Beth Sheppard says she has been getting ready since February but it keeps being put off.

On Monday she was told less than an hour before it was due to happen.

Beth said: "Why are you being told at 9 o'clock there is a bed available and 50 minutes later it's not?

"There were four people cancelled that day, so you can't tell me they lose four beds within the space of 50 minutes."

Each time she is given a fresh appointment Beth has had to make arrangements at work and sort out childcare - only for the plans to be thrown into chaos.

The hospital has been under pressure over the last few months. At one point bosses declared a "black alert" when it ran out of beds.

That is being blamed on delays discharging patients who still need care and a big increase in the number of people going through A&E.

A spokesperson for Treliske said: "We are extremely sorry that we have had to postpone Mrs Sheppard’s operation. It is not something we ever like to do and we do appreciate the distress this causes when a patient has physically and emotionally prepared themselves for surgery.

“Unfortunately our hospitals remain extremely busy and this has limited the availability of beds for some patients coming in for planned procedures. Difficult decisions have had to be made to give priority to those, such as cancer patients, who have the greatest clinical urgency.

“We are making every effort to get Mrs Sheppard readmitted as soon as possible.”
