VIDEO: Russian Aircraft Warned Off Coast of Cornwall

Pirate FM has learnt RAF jets escorted two Russian aircraft away from the coast of Cornwall on Wednedasy night.

It is thought the craft could have been heading towards the channel, as Russia flexes its muscles.

Two Russian Bear aircraft flew close to British airspace at around 6.30pm last night, after flying down the west coast of Ireland.

They were met by two RAF Typhoons, scrambled from Lincolnshire, and escorted away from the Duchy.

In a statement the Ministry of Defence said: "RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighter aircraft were launched after Russian aircraft were identified flying close to UK airspace.

"The Russian planes were escorted by the RAF until they were out of the UK area of interest. At no time did the Russian military aircraft cross into UK sovereign airspace."

Video, which appears to show Russian planes being intercepted by RAF fighters in a separate incident, has been posted on a Russian website.

It follows comments from the Defence Secretary Michael Fallon after two-long range Russian bombers flew down the English channel off the coast of Bournemouth earlier this month: "It is the first time since the height of the Cold War that has happened and it just shows you the need to respond each time he does something like that," he said.

Sky's Defence Correspondent Alastair Bunkall said: "They are quite regularly now 'buzzing' British airspace, never actually coming into British airspace, because that really would be a violation, but coming very close. They're playing those war games we used to see so often during the cold war.

"You would expect that, last night, given they were met off the coast of Cornwall, they were probably making their way down the channel once again."

Three times as many flights coming close to European airspace have been recorded over the last twelve months compared to recent years.

Mark was at home in Marazion when the Typhoons screamed overhead. He said: "They flew across the top of our house and went out across Mount's Bay. It was that loud it took us all by surprise - in fact it scared the living daylights out of me and the kids. We thought the windows were going to smash - it took a few seconds to work out what the noise was.

"They then turned, changed direction and came back over again - same speed and same kind of noise levels.

"It was actually quite scary, working out what was going on at the time."

Up until now the operations to 'buzz' the UK have usually taken place towards Scotland.

It is presumed they were testing response times for Britain's military hardware to reach the far southwest.

It came just hours before Michael Fallon warned there is a "real and present danger" Russia could repeat its covert campaigns in the Crimea and Ukraine to destablise former Soviet bloc countries.

The Defence Secretary said NATO must be ready for Russian aggression against alliance members including Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

He warned the action could involve using irregular troops, cyber attacks and inflaming tensions with ethnic Russian minorities.

"NATO has to be ready for any kind of aggression from Russia, whatever form it takes. NATO is getting ready," he said.

Mr Fallon added that he was worried about Russian President Vladimir Putin's "pressure on the Baltics".
