A dog has saved the life of his Bude owner, when she collapsed downstairs in the middle of the night.

Linda Humphreys passed out with blood poisoning at Whitstone, while her husband slept upstairs.

But labrador Mazie went and woke him up - with his slippers.

Linda told Pirate FM: "Mazie, who's a rescue dog, ran upstairs to try to wake my husband. She went as far as getting him his slippers and putting his slippers on the bed. When he still didn't get up she started jumping on the bed, which she's not allowed to do. So, eventually, he got up, put on his slippers, came downstairs and found me unconscious on the floor."

He found Cookie, the couple's other dog, standing guard over her.

Linda was rushed to Derriford and is now recovering. But she is clear that her dogs helped save her. She said: "My health hasn't been good for the last couple of months and if I have a really bad day we notice that the dogs are very attentive and very protective of me - which is lovely."

The couple were originally advised against rescuing Mazie, who has suffered from behavioural problems and can be nervous around people.

Husband Mark said: "We're very, very proud of Mazie. She's brilliant.

"She was on the bed, jumping on me, wouldn't leave me and made sure that I got up.

"With Linda, since she's been ill, the dogs are always trying to stay with her, they won't leave her."

Charity, Medical Detection Dogs says the story could mean they extend their research and work.

Dr Claire Guest says dogs have a natural urge to protect us and the tools to do it: "They have an incredible sense of smell. So anything that changes in our bodies, any chemical changes that result in a change in our odour, dogs can recognise these.

"They have been bred for many, many generations to become our companions so they are very, very attuned to us but also very protective. They want to keep us safe and it's this combination that makes them fantastic and means they are able to warn us of dangers we are unaware of."
