Routes Replaced After Cornish Bus Company Stopped Trading

Dozens of workers at a Cornish bus company that has gone out of business start the search for new jobs.

Almost a hundred and sixty staff are affected after Western Greyhound stopped trading on Friday, including driver Christian Barn.

He has worked for the company for seven years and said: "I was angry. It's hard to find another job in Cornwall but hopefully I'll get one soon. We were planning to move house at the end of the month, renting, but still we're going to try and sort things out."

Services were suspended over the weekend but Cornwall Council says it has managed to get most routes covered.

A temporary timetable is running from Monday.

A spokesperson from County Hall said: "The Council's Passenger Transport team has been working with the bus industry to arrange alternative services to those that were provided formerly by Western Greyhound.

"First, Plymouth City Bus and Stagecoach bus companies are running replacement services; Bodmin Group Travel is running a replacement service for the Liskeard School run until the end of the academic year.

"It is hoped that, for the main part, disruption to the general public will be kept to a minimum."

Michael Watson, Managing Director of Stagecoach South West, commented "I was saddened to hear the news about Western Greyhound and my immediate concern was how we could help keep disruption to their customers to a minimum.

"Fortunately, we were able to quickly agree with Cornwall County Council that we could take over the operation of both the 584 and 595. We'll be busy this weekend allocating vehicles and drivers to these services ready for first thing Monday morning."

Stagecoach will continue to operate the existing timetables and will accept all valid Western Greyhound season tickets.

Former Western Greyhound buses will still be running but they will not be operated by Western Greyhound.

All Real Time Passenger Information signs (RTPI) have been switched off to avoid confusion while the service timetables are being updated.
