Cornwall gets its first rapid chargepoint for eco-cars.

The unit at the Eden Project is one of 16 being fitted across the Duchy this summer.

The chargepoints will allow the public to complete a full charge of their ultra-low emission vehicles in as little as 30 minutes.

Roads Minister Andrew Jones has formally launched the chargepoint at the biomes near St Austell, as part of a two day visit to Cornwall.

He has also seen how DfT investment is improving journeys, including the A30.

Mr Jones said: "Electric vehicles are part of our future. They deliver fantastic results both as vehicles themselves, but also they're much cleaner. The key point really is that they have no emissions and, as such, do a fantastic job for improving our environment.

"Cornwall is certainly doing very well in leading the way here - there's no question about that at all.

"What we have her is actually a step, and a big step, in a big picture which is happening right across our country where we are seeing take-up of electric vehicles go through the roof. The sales of electric vehicles are about 400% up on the same period last year so that's a huge change.

"The government has set an objective that by 2050, all of the cars and vans that are bought and sold in this country will be emission-free so that's a bold step. But we can't achieve that unless we have local leadership and that's what we're seeing here today with the installation of this charging network."
