Children Taught To Beat Bullying By Self-Defence

Children Taught To Beat Bullying By Self-Defence

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 8:02am 18th October 2015.

Cornish children are being taught how to tackle bullying through self-defence.

The Children's Protector course is teaching tots as young as six.

The non-violent techniques help them learn how to escape and get away from someone.

Classes will be held in Looe, Newquay, Liskeard, Hayle, Padstow, Helston, Truro and Looe.

Simon Brooker is from MANTIS which runs the course and said: "It basically teaches a child, like catching a ball, to escape release from a grab from someone that's bigger than them. Not to hit back, not to strike, not to gauge, not to do all the things that we really don't want our children doing and just get away and then know what to do next.

"In their life growing up, the toys, the games, it's all really, when you look at it, centred around violence. Even my kids, playing Xbox's and Play Stations, even though they're tame as far as the graphics, but it's still killing, hurting, punching, kicking and we wanted something that countered that."

Ed Byrne is running courses across the Duchy and said: "I just think in this day and age, I think everyone should have the chance to be safe or feel safe. So not only is it good for the children to learn to defend themselves if the need arises but also for the parents to have peace of mind. I get calls every day of children being bullied, either at school or on the way home."
