VIDEO: 100 Families Helped By New Clothesbank

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 6:01am 19th October 2015.

There is a new lifeline for struggling families in Cornwall.

St Austell has opened its own clothes bank.

It dishes out items to those on low incomes and benefits, including things like curtains, shoes, bedding and toiletries.

It has already helped around 100 people since opening a month ago.

Now they are plans for the idea to roll out further across the Duchy.

Sharon Sisson set it up, she said it is a good place for people to meet others and socialise too.

She said: "Just from the number of people coming in to see us we know there is a need, it would be lovely if there wasn't. It is sad that this is needed in one respect, but it is really good that the people of St Austell and the surrounding areas have come together to help us help people in the community.

"We are one of the most deprived areas in the country. I think 14.5% are living in poverty, and that was back in 2011, and we all know things have got more difficult since then. We believe that that figure is higher, so there obviously is a need for this."

The St Austell clothing bank is the only one in Cornwall that caters for adults.

It is based in the light and life centre in the town, where the Foodbank is based.

It is open every Tuesday and Friday from 1pm to 3pm.
