600 need to find homes by the weekend.

The British Hen Welfare Trust has put out an urgent appeal.

Spokesperson Gaynor Davies says anyone can give them a home and they will rehome anywhere between three and 20 to any one place.

She told Pirate FM they make great pets: "Anybody can look after hens, we don't mind if someone just wants a few to go in the back garden, they don't need much in the way of looking after, just a nice secure coop, shed, barn or stable, and to be let out in the morning and shut in at night.

"They are about eighteen months old and will still be laying enough eggs for your breakfast and they will make lovely, curious, endearing little pets once they have settled in.

"They basically are just cats and dogs with feathers, they are really friendly and it is good for children to be able to see where their food is coming from as well."
